Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS)
SILS is performed in a hospital operating room. The surgeon makes one small incision through the umbilicus and fills the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. A camera and multiple operating instruments are placed through the incision and the surgical procedure is performed. At the termination of the procedure, the skin incision is closed with absorbable sutures, resulting in a small scar in the umbilicus. Many patients are discharged home the same day or within 23 hours.
Most patients who are candidates for laparoscopic surgery are also candidates for SILS. SILS can be performed for various surgical conditions, including bariatric surgery (gastric banding including the Lap-Band® and sleeve gastrectomy), gall bladder removal (cholecystectomy), appendix removal (appendectomy), and others. At Texas Center for Medical & Surgical Weight Loss, our surgeons are experienced in SILS. Please call 210-651-0303 to schedule an appointment with our surgeons to evaluate the possibility of performing SILS as a treatment for your condition.
