Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, most commonly known as Gastric Bypass surgery, is the most common bartiatric surgery performed in the United States and in Corpus Christi, Texas. It is a combination of two weight loss procedures (both a restrictive procedure and a malabsorptive one) that work together to help you lose weight. The stomach is reduced in size so that you feel full more quickly than if your stomach was its full size. In addition the parts of the small intestine, where the highest amount of calories are absorbed, are re-routed in order to be avoided. A small pouch at the top of the stomach is created through stapling off the uppermost portion from the rest of the stomach. This new pouch acts as your new "stomach" and once this area fills up with food you feel satisfied and full. This also reduces the amount of food a person can consume in a single meal.
The second part of the small intestine, where less calories are absorbed, is then connected to the pouch, and further down is connected to the first part of the small intestine called the duodenum (the part of the small intestines that absorbs the most calories). This allows food to bypass the majority of the stomach and the duodenum. This often results in significant changes in the body such as the resolution of diabetes in the vast majority of patients. It also allows patients to feel satisfied from only a small amount of food.
The benefits of gastric bypass surgery are tremendous. Gastric bypass patients
typically lose 62%1 of their excess weight. Type 2 Diabetes is resolved
in 84% of patients123, often within days of surgery. High blood pressure
is resolved in 75% of patients1, and cholesterol is improved in 95%
of patients1. Osteoarthritis and joint pain resolve in 41% of patients 4 and ovulation is restored in 100% of patients5. For more on disease resolution after bariatric surgery, go to Disease
