Del Rio Gastric Bypass Surgery

Of all the bariatric procedures performed in the United States and Del Rio, Texas, Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass surgery, more commonly referred to as simply Gastric Bypass surgery, is the most popular and common. Gastric Bypass surgery is actually a combination of two weight loss procedures; one is a restrictive procedure that reduces the size of the stomach and one is a malabsorptive procedure that limits the caloric intake of the small intestine. The restrictive portion of the procedure involves stapling the uppermost part of the stomach off from the rest of the stomach. This creates a "pouch" that acts like a smaller stomach that significantly reduces the amount of food a person requires to feel full since the pouch is much smaller than the entire stomach.

The first part of the small intestine, known as the duodenum, is then mostly bypassed by connecting the pouch further down the small intestine. The duodenum is connected much further down which limits the amount of calories it can absorb before the food moves on. This allows food to bypass the majority of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. Aside from causing singificant weight loss many patients will also notice significant changes in their health such as the reduction or resolution of disaeses such as diabetes. It also allows patients to feel satisfied from only a small amount of food.

The benefits of gastric bypass surgery are quite significant. Gastric bypass patients typically lose 62%1 of their excess weight. Type 2 Diabetes is resolved in 84% of patients123, often within days of surgery. High blood pressure is resolved in 75% of patients1, and cholesterol is improved in 95% of patients1. Osteoarthritis and joint pain resolved in 41% of patients 4 and ovulation is restored in 100% of patients5. For more on disease resolution after bariatric surgery, go to Disease Resolution.
