San Antonio Gastric Bypass Surgery

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass is the most commonly performed bariatric procedure in San Antonio and in the United States. It is a combination procedure (both restrictive and malabsorptive). The stomach is reduced in size, and the first section of the small intestine, where most of the calories are absorbed, is bypassed. The small stomach pouch limits the amount of food that can be eaten, and bypassing part of the small intestine decreases calorie absorption and accounts for significant physiologic changes after surgery (such as those that can cure diabetes). In most cases, patients experience a profound early sense of satisfaction or "satiety" that reduces their desire to eat as well.

After gastric bypass surgery, patients are placed on a liquid diet for one week. Under the guidance of our dietary and medical team, the diet then advances to a high protein diet. Patients are required to take a series of vitamins to ensure proper nutrition, and our exercise physiologists provide an exercise routine tailored to patients' needs. Each member of our skilled and compassionate team is committed to helping our patients maximize their success, both right after surgery and for the long run as well.

The benefits of gastric bypass surgery are amazing. Gastric bypass patients typically lose 62%1 of their excess weight. Type 2 Diabetes is resolved in 84% of patients123, often within days of surgery. High blood pressure is resolved in 75% of patients1, and cholesterol is improved in 95% of patients1. Osteoarthritis and joint pain resolve in 41% of patients4 and ovulation is restored in 100% of patients5.

A critical part of making the decision to undergo gastric bypass surgery is choosing the right program and surgeon. Each of our surgeons has undergone fellowship training that gives them the expertise needed to perform advanced laparoscopic (minimally-invasive) operations. Our surgeons employ the latest surgical technology and have a proven record of success in bariatric treatment. Additionally, they are caring individuals who chose the field of bariatric surgery because they truly enjoy helping change a person's life forever.

Our office is located inside Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Other areas of Texas we serve include: Austin, Corpus Christi, New Braunfels, Beaumont, and Laredo.
