Dr. Cavazos received his training in bariatric surgery from the world renowned Wittgrove Bariatric Center under the tutelage of Dr. Alan Wittgrove.

The Wittgrove Bariatric Center is located in San Diego, California and was recently awarded the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence certificate. This prestigious distinction recognizes bariatric programs that have demonstrated impeccable records of successful weight loss surgery.

Dr. Wittgrove is the medical director at the Wittgrove Bariatric Center and world renowned as the father of laparoscopic gastric bypass. Dr. Wittgrove performed the world’s first laparoscopic gastric bypass in 1993 and has since performed hundreds of successful weight loss procedures.

In 1999 Dr. Wittgrove performed gastric bypass surgery on Wilson Philips singer Carnie Wilson. Due to her popularity, Carnie was able to raise awareness worldwide about morbid obesity and the benefits of bariatric surgery. Dr. Wittgrove’s successful surgery on Carnie was broadcast live on the internet and Carnie’s story has now been told in both her book and countless newspaper and magazine articles.

Fellowship training is the highest training available to bariatric surgeons, and Dr. Cavazos is proud to have spent his time training one on one with a legend in the field of bariatric surgery. He has now taken the valuable experience he gained from Dr. Wittgrove and is the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at the Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio.
