Weight
Loss Revision Surgery
Revision operations
are operations that are performed for failed prior weight
loss operations. If a weight loss operation produces complications
that do not resolve in time or if it does not produce
the desired outcome, then a revision operation may be
a reasonable consideration. Revision operations may convert
one type of weight loss procedure to another type of procedure.
Some types of weight loss procedures are truly a set up
for failure that a patient did not have an appreciation
for at the time of their initial operation. In these cases
revision surgery may result in a tremendous improvement
for the patient. On the other hand, sometimes a patient
does not follow the “rules” or recommendations given in
order to make their initial operation successful. In this
situation it may be that no operation will be capable
of producing a favorable outcome.
Revision operations can be accomplished laparoscopically
(with small incisions) in most cases. In some cases a
large incision must be made in order to complete the operation
safely. Statistically speaking, revision operations are
higher risk operations than first time operations performed
for weight loss
